Kate Griffith's Walking Stick

Kate Griffiths who lived in the quarry mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales was the headmistress of Rhiwbach quarry school which was opened in 1909.The school was in the actual quarry village site high in the mountains and Kate Griffiths walked there each day in extreme conditions. The stick which I created for the installation 'Merched Chwarel' doubles as an artist's easel, a teaching prop with original slate from the area and pencil case containing slate pencils and felt rubber.
