On 1st July 2006, by using semaphore and a relay of four local boats, messages were communicated between the Naze Tower, Walton-on-Naze, and the sea fort Roughs Tower, home of micro nation the Independent Principality of Sealand, 8 miles off the Essex coast. The event at the Naze Tower was broadcast live by BBC Radio Essex.
