On the Economic Foundations of a Merchant's House

By  Janet Sang 2013

Dimensions
30 x84 x45cm

On the Economic Foundations of a Merchant’s House It has taken a crisis to expose the workings of the economic system we live in and to bring the language of finance into public discourse. Admiring the architecture and furnishings of Pallant House, I found myself asking what manner of trade and currency provided the funding for the growth of 18th century town houses in England. My paper sculpture is made of double-sided screen-prints, using historical images and extracts from economic debates of the period, which suggest the shaky foundations of such beautiful, harmonious buildings.
