So close

Joanna Mowbray

‘So close’ was made in response to this particular location in the garden, on a slope, surrounded by trees on one side, which will cast shadows across the forms. The architecture of the buildings also provides a contrast to the curves of the sculpture. In the development of this work I have been concerned about creating an emotional presence within the environment. To achieve this I’ve explored the visual and physical language of two and three dimensions: shape, line, form, position, implied movement, the changes of natural light and shade. The two forms are positioned in a very specific relationship to each other, close , almost touching, creating a dynamic space in between. Each form is dependant on the other to create the whole, neither form will work without the other. The forms are minimal and the curves are very carefully articulated to make a complex, subtle and balanced sculpture.
