The Denny Battleship

The Denny Battleship, part of the Denny Treasure Trail, 2018; cast iron and oak. Commissioned by Falkirk Council as part of the £7.6m regeneration project in the centre of Denny, Falkirk, Scotland. The sculpture, in the bow shape of its oak base, and in the cast iron ship itself, reference the cast iron foundries that amongst many other artefacts made engine castings for ships, notably HMS Vanguard. Denny's industrial past is also reflected in its deck of factories. The printing of board games at Denny's paper mills, such as Monopoly, and in particular that game's ship counter, inspired the form of the hull. Photo: Ian Marshall
