The Horsetail Gates

By  Adrian Moakes 2012

Adrian Moakes

The Horsetail Gates are a co-ordinated set of working entrance artworks welcoming visitors to Moseley Bog & Joy's Wood Nature Reserve in South Birmingham (B13 9LD). The design was developed by Adrian through an extensive programme of public consultation, creative workshops and other participatory events. Smaller ancestors of the gigantic, pre-historic Horsetail still thrive in Moseley Bog and other ancient wooded wetlands that are managed and maintained by The Wildlife Trust and protected against urban development by their designation as Local Nature Reserves. The artworks include signage in a unique font developed by the artist, a working height barrier, kissing gate and vehicle gate - all growing out of the existing fencing and landscape. The Horsetail Gates were installed by the artist in September 2012, with landscaping & associated works completed by contractors for the official opening in December. The artworks are part of a wider project to improve access to, understanding and conservation of the nature reserve, funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
