The play sessions / jamming
The play sessions are spaces of time when people can come and explore where they are using materials provided.
You are invited to look at shapes and shadows, and notice what you see around you. I provide colour and clear transparencies, and a variety of hands on tools so you can respond to where we are. The sessions may last 1-3hours and can be sequential.. the following sessions activity are decided form the needs of people before.
The camera becomes a composition stranger and a tool to see what’s here. People make a 3d model or a set of shapes and use a light source( sun, torch, uv) to cast a shadow. As soon as a photo is taken of the shadow people begin to see the magic… and they’re off!
I also offer Promot Cards .. an optional extra set of suggestions if someone doesn’t know what to do next. .. for example “turn it upside down”, “make a shadow in the ceiling/ outside” and “join it with someone else’s.
I have always understood play to be functional when it is in a safe space, then freeflow ( visual) ideas take place, alone or with another/ others, and a safe space to process, mimick and try out immediate ideas.
People play in many different ways.
This work I guess ultimately provides others with the opportunity to develop more creative thinking and seeing. Visual communication is in the remit of us all. As communities become more localised, playing with ideas can make strong connections and offers genre defying problem solving skills.
People play and make. Shadows capture moments.
