Site Specific woven sculpture . Short term artist residency
‘the things we lost in the fire’ was a site-specific response to my research into the history of two Oxford buildings; the former Oxford fire station and the former Oxford Lucas clothing factory. The work re-connects the two buildings through a 1965 fire at the Lucas clothing factory, adjacent to the Oxford Fire Station which was extinguished by the fire crew of the time.
The residency involved research on and off site and making the work directly in the gallery space, live, during gallery opening hours.
The residency and work formed part of ‘Shed Space’; an exhibition “about exploring the notion of the shed as a making space. Central to the exhibition was garden shed built within the Old Fire Station main gallery. Complete with an environmentally sustainable living roof the gallery shed became a backdrop for the exhibiting artists to use for their creative gallery residencies, workshops, demonstrations and events”. Shed Space took place at The Gallery, Arts at the Old Fire Station (AOFS) in Oxford, summer 2016.
