Tierra Firme: Marian Edwards

By  Peter Grego 2018
The exhibition, Tierra Firme, presents the work of Marian Edwards. In 2006 she was faced with a major loss of sight which devastated her life as an artist. Her journey back to a way of ‘seeing’ through drawing is documented here in a series of drawings made, over a number of years, at the same location in the north east of Spain. She speaks of the process of drawing circumventing her sight loss. “Returning to the same spot in Spain allowed me to come back again and again to the same subject and through over 40 drawings, to rebuild much of what I had lost”. The vibrancy of the drawings reveal something of the emotional rawness and excitement of her journey. Marian Edwards taught for 26 years in schools and colleges in the West Midlands. She has an MA in Fine Art from Birmingham City University and a Postgraduate Diploma in the History of Art and Design. She has worked with the Barber Institute of Fine Art helping to establish sessions for blind and partially sighted people and has recently carried out similar projects in Telford and Worcester. In 2012 she exhibited in 'Art Blind’ in Cologne
