A Play, With Light - Wardain Case No1

Project: Reactionary This sculpture was created at home, during the first lockdown of 2020 that took place during my finals MA Art and Science, Central Saint Martins, UAL., a time of disbelief and what seemed like a never-ending mountain of fear and anticipation. Defining a world in a dream like state, in a river of thoughts as if in a permanent daydream of a continuous uncertainty, this absurd time was our daily reality and yet unthinkable prior to the pandemic. The white cushion hints at this, hanging from its light pendent, innocence combined with a nonsensical sense of extravagance. Fashioned from the recycled fabric of a child’s skirt, introduces the human aspect of the sculpture with frills that suggest a flamenco dancer and a Spanish heritage. The concept for the cushion came from the idea of a lap tray or tray cushion that might rest on a patient’s legs as an aid to balance a meal. The padded tray implies protection for the contents of the suspended Wardian case which contains the precious plants that were needed to be cared for.
