Working really quickly and spontaneously and painting the final layer in one go. The exploration of the surface was at the forefront of my mind - play and explore. An earthy selection of colours and patterns, mark-making and scratching into wet on wet; a playful approach and letting the painting take on its own form. Patterns and rich earthy warm colours seem to be appearing in my recent paintings, this past year particularly.

'Thrust' has strong structural elements with architectural associations, verticals, horizontals, squares and rectangles . They can be reminiscent of internal and external walls and rooms, places and spaces linked with a passage, a portal, a doorway. And the sensitive surface qualities create textures and feeling alluding to archaeology and limitless time and space, and drawn or incised lines and distressed areas of scratching are like well trodden paths. Bcalm has a history of transition starting from 2013 when I exhibited this painting in a solo show in London, Thomas and Paul Gallery. Returning after the show I modified the painting by simplifying the complex array of shapes and making subtle changes to the colour values.
