Folkestone
Maureen Jordan is a Northern Irish artist currently based in Kent. The move to Folkestone in 2019 was to set up my current live/work space.

Using found objects and recycled materials, I respond to specific sites both indoors and out. When combined with materials considered to have more value or impact, such as stained glass or neon, the contrast highlights tensions between the sacred and banal, discarded or salvaged.

Born and raised in Belfast, the early life-experience is inextricable from the practice.

“…you aren’t so much trying to describe it as trying to locate it….. like putting your hand into a nest and finding something beginning to hatch out in your head”

Responding to a particular site, this inner ‘biography’ connects like a plug into a socket creates energy. The old rag and bone shop of the heart is a rich source of material.

During a career in arts administration I worked with many artists in diverse contexts: touring theatre companies, university departments, EU projects and in the Arts Council of England. During Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture I had responsibility for the management of the ACE/DCMS investment and legacy planning to ensure lasting investment in Liverpool artists and organisations.

Since 2009, I have been developing my own practice, exhibiting and creating site-responsive installations, completing an MA in Fine Art at UCA and in 2017 I won the Ashurst Emerging Sculptor Award.
