Using found objects, reclaimed and recycled materials, I make installations both indoors and out. When combined with materials considered to have more value or impact, such as stained glass or neon the contrast highlights tensions between the sacred and banal, lost or redeemed.
Lived Experience
During a career in arts administration I worked with many artists in diverse contexts: touring theatre companies, university departments, EU projects and in the Arts Council of England. During Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture I managed legacy planning initiatives to ensure a lasting impact in Liverpool artists and organisations.
Since 2009, I have been developing my own practice, exhibiting and creating site-responsive installations, completing an MA in Fine Art and in 2017 being given the Ashurst Emerging Sculptor Award.
A background in theatre influences my approach. The objects I choose are often like props but with memories embedded: a discarded bedframe laced with stained glass echoes fantasies or nightmares; a ‘choir’ of piano stools, customised with parts from a deconstructed church organ play birdsong on contact; vintage milk bottles recall the beginnings of a welfare state.
The life experience is inseparable from the work
The physical act of construction is a renegotiation, a way of thinking through, of reading the world and being more fully in it, and of bearing witness to my time and place.
