Michael Isles

Cheltenham
I've been taking photographs since when I studied photography in the 1970s and was mentored by expedition photographer Richard Ravensdale FRGS. Photography has remained a passion in my life and I'm now more involved in it than at any other time.

Minimalism and mindfulness are two descriptors that I feel work well with my photography and my other work as an education consultant in social work and mental health (following my previous career as a mental health social worker and university lecturer).

Mindfulness can be said to be the conscious awareness of the moment, my intention being to provide a space for the viewer to become absorbed in. Minimalism is perhaps summed up as an appreciation of simple forms and a recognition that, to quote a well-used adage, “less is more”.

Much of my work focuses on the built environment, taking shapes, spaces, lines and forms in contemporary architecture to instil a sense of calm and order that I hope viewers can connect with.
