Michelle Marie Forrest

Bristol
Artist and researcher.

My practice is centred around the promise of ‘a scattered methodology’ —a constellation of thoughts, images, objects and processes in which referential relationships between things can be contemplated. In response to digital platforms that use algorithms to curate ever-expanding data streams, I draw attention to the idiosyncrasies of interpretation and the materiality of my editing process.

I define my approach as ‘psycho-techno-archaeological’ —a ‘mashup’ of technical methods and practices {active listening, appropriation, assemblage}, used to rework existing material such as film, music, poetry, literature and theory. Curious to see if these elements can be transfigured, I create disruptions to spark new connections.

Considering matters that range from the deeply personal to the universal {broken hearts, financial instability, social inequality, cosmic collapse} —what emerges is a series of propositions. Through speculative fictions that aim to transform the exhaustion of physical and psychological limits into a survival strategy, my pseudo-artefacts simultaneously celebrate and shatter the tenuous links between an archaeological past and a techno-future.
