William Luz
William Luz is an artist and educator who is concerned with drawing, in that he cares about drawing. Most recently he is interested in how he can draw without making drawings.
Sometimes he draws things that people ask him to as a commercial artist, sometimes he draws things for himself, other times he makes work about drawing, in a way to think about the personal and performative activity of art making. This work usually finds form as drawings, that often become cut up, reformed, layered and pieced together to make documents of action, collages of many little moments.
The work also finds form as moving image work that reflects back on this action, thinking about process and trying to look at drawing from a different, embodied, expanded angle.
Other times, this work is producing images that get emailed to clients but may be made outside of the computer; these pictures, often using bold, colourful graphic forms and flowing gestures, embrace the drawn line.
William has an MA in drawing with distinction from Arts University Plymouth where he now teaches across the arts MA programmes, is one third of Nous Vous and has exhibited in solo and group shows across the UK and internationally.
Drawing as thinking,
drawing as feeling,
drawing as sensing,
drawing as not drawing.
