This painting is based on the sighting of a kestrel on the Isle of Portland, Dorset during a walk in which it appeared to follow me around a quarry. At the time the painting was started I was reading about and listening to the work of Olivier Messiaen, which is why Abîme des Oiseaux seemed appropriate as a title. This also related to other events then involving refugees. However, since then the image has developed further to include a figure and has taken on new meaning, as the man-made landscape and large scale earth movement going on is similar to what I've seen on a former archaeological site I've recently been visiting near my home. This is because that ground is being prepared for the building of new housing.
