Birthwake

By  Henny Burnett 2000

Martin Urmson

"Birthwake" was commissioned for the touring exhibition " A sense of Occasion". Using distressed muslin an ancient swaddling band or shroud is formed. It has the appearance of a tablecloth. Arranged around the edge are nine place-settings, one for each month of pregnancy. Artifacts and unearthed remnants, laid as place settings. An archaeological excavation - celebration and mourning in a single event. The whole piece is suspended and lit from underneath.
