Blood, Water, Honey and Wine

Joe Lee

A durational drawing performance at the Ruthin International Arts Festival in North Wales where I drew some very rare Iron Age Ritual Spoons. They were found in the Ruthin area and were possibly part of an Iron Age burial where the ash would have helped to preserve the metal. The spoons were  most probably used for fortune telling and divination by the druids but  were also adopted by priests for eucharist ceremonies. In this performance over two days I drew them in graphite as a portal through time in the landscape, wiping graphite on my robe as I went to show the labour involved. I then I took the drawing when it was finished as a ritual offering  to the River Clwyd and set it free in the water as an offering to the gods.
