Correspondence 4 Périphérique'

Dimensions
approximately 120 x 160 x 2cm (96 of 98 pieces)

In Correspondence 4, Périphérique, the image fragments were taken from my (documented) car journey around the outskirts of Paris late one winter night with a friend. Again, The colour has been augmented, but is more varied due to the nature of city lighting from multiple sources. The 98 ‘balloon’ pointer components are free, separate but related elements in this piece. For installation the individual elements could be hung individually on a wall, or attached to a separate panel prior to hanging if necessary. Once they had all been completed as small paintings, they were arranged to form a rough circuit. Other ways of organizing them were tried out. It seems that getting them into the right shape as a whole is quite critical to the way that it might be perceived as a unit and several different ways have now been attempted. There needs to be the right kind of ‘flow’ with the blocks in a certain order. This doesn’t look right when too regular, nor when placed as though on a literal map. It’s more about the disorienting experience of being whirled around an unknown city’s outskirts in a car. There could be a contra flow as well, or some areas in confusion or disarray, whilst others are orderly. Other patterns have been attempted such as flower/snowflake shapes. The background trial area is black paper. The current arrangement has been 'fixed' by my drawing around each one in it's place with white crayon on black paper. These have been cut out and holes numbered. This will be used as the ‘cartoon’ in future for installation purposes. The final organisation of the pieces has ended up - being quite 'jewel-like', which is a simple arrangement which further transforms the 'pointer' forms.
