Diaspora

Diaspora is a small series of portraits reflecting on cultural inheritance, visibility and the process of looking again at parts of yourself you may once have felt distant from.

The work was made through my own experience of growing up mixed British and Chinese, and the complicated feelings that can come with that: pride, uncertainty, shame, curiosity and recognition. In these images, Chinese visual references are not used as costume or decoration, but as a way of thinking through memory, self-presentation and return.

Red light, projected landscapes, fabric and gesture appear throughout the series, creating portraits that sit between fashion image, family memory and personal reflection. The work is about diasporic identity as something active and shifting, shaped by what we inherit but also by what we choose to reclaim.
