Margate Steps aka The Margate Coast and Flood Protection Scheme 2013

This landmark £6m coastal engineering project and new public space for Margate completed in 2013, was conceived by a multi-disciplinary design team consisting of landscape architect Tom Darcy from Jacobs, myself as project artist and coastal engineers East Kent Engineering Partnership & coastal risk managers - Simon Herrington, under the guidance and lead of Mike Humber - Head of Maritime & Technical Services & Nick Dermott - Heritage Advisor to TDC. The project was funded by the Environment Agency and the MACH (Margate Arts Creativity Heritage) Project led by Sophie Jeffrey. Thanks to Ros Anderson & Photographer Dean Barclay. It has become a much loved and photographed addition to the Margate landscape, which is a brilliant story to tell. The local community in Margate marked the opening of the steps with a celebratory ad hoc gathering, which was documented by Louise Oldfield on her Blog, Margate Architecture in May 2013 https://bit.ly/2GV1gDE

These are the Frederick Chancellor Building of 1905 and the Law Building of 1931. One of the most historic & resonant as well as the earliest buildings on the site is the Grade II listed Anne Knight…
