Pretty In Pain
"Pretty in Pain" is a deeply personal ceramic sculpture created in response to the artist's hysterectomy, exploring themes of healing, loss, and the female body. The vessel’s asymmetrical, bulbous form abstracts the human figure, reflecting the depersonalisation and vulnerability felt during such a transformative experience.
A crawl glaze coats the surface, creating fractures and scars that symbolise healing and the lasting impact of surgery. Beneath this fragile exterior lies the strength of black stoneware clay, evoking resilience amidst change.
Perforations in the vessel suggest emptiness and loss, connecting to the idea of the female body as a vessel—both nurturing and hollowed. The title, "Pretty in Pain," encapsulates the duality of beauty and suffering, inviting viewers to confront the emotional complexities of transformation and identity.
Through this work, it offers a poignant reflection on the scars that shape us, blending personal narrative with universal themes of resilience and the human condition.
