Defective Goddesses
Laima, the birth-giving goddess
This body of work bridges autobiographical making with historical research into health, exploring the enduring narratives of gods, goddesses, myths, and legends. It examines how these stories have shaped societal ideas of what should remain hidden and who has the authority to challenge those norms.
Rooted in the context of underfunded, inequitable healthcare systems riddled with gendered biases, Defective Goddess interrogates how historical attitudes have influenced contemporary healthcare disparities. Through this work, the focus shifts toward questions of how we arrived at this juncture and how we might reimagine equity and equality in healthcare.
Employing a deeply personal yet universally resonant lens, the project juxtaposes historical iconography with modern narratives, challenging the viewer to reflect on the cultural constructs that perpetuate unequal healthcare outcomes. This exploration invites audiences to engage critically with the intersection of history, myth, and societal health structures, encouraging dialogue around the possibilities for transformative change.
