'The Largest Longitude / Time Plot in the World'

By  Christopher Tipping 2008 - 2010

Rod Varley

'The Largest Longitude / Time Plot in the World' Carnival House is a major headquarters building at West Quay, Southampton, constructed around a 5 storey Atrium & Wintergarden for Carnival UK. The dramatic full height rain screen is constructed of bespoke concrete panels which make up a significant element of the facade & were the result of a collaboration between Tipping & Dr Paolo Cipollini of the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton who studies Satellite Oceanography at a Global Scale. The work is constructed of periodic panels of low relief concrete informed by satellite data of mid-oceanic Rossby Waves. The work has the appearance of sea-surface topography and is highlighted and enhanced by a shifting digitally controlled lighting scheme. Commissioned by Development Securities plc. Project Architects: Auckett Fitzroy Robinson Main Contractors: Millers Bespoke Concrete Screens: Decomo Specialist Moulds: Patterns & Moulds Ltd
