The Trogs is an ongoing research project into a group of beatniks and geology enthusiasts who occupied and partied in the caves and disused mines of Derbyshire in the late 60s and 70s, influencing following generations. Many were hippies and bikers from surrounding cities attracted to the freedom the countryside could offer.
Controversial at the time and surrounded by myth and legend, there are very few to no recordings of the trogs experiences from their own perspectives. I believe the Trogs are an important part of rural counterculture history and they are the precursor to the free-rave scene. Their legacy should be recorded and honoured.
Over the past few years with the support of an Arts Council England DYCP grant and The Elephant Trust, I have been recording interviews and collecting visual materials from the last living Trogs.
I am beginning to explore further funding and support options for this project. Please reach out if this project interests you.
