Tunnel #1

By  Steve Messam 2014
A very temporary light installation in the Victoria Tunnel beneath Newcastle upon Tyne. The piece was designed to accentuate the subterranean environment while a 22-piece orchestra performed site-specific works. The blue was generated by LED lights fixed to the arch by way of a spring device. The mono frequency of the liht source created a wash of a single spectrum wavelength of colour, eliminating all other colours. Baffles and direction of light enabled the colour to appear to stop abruptly at either end. The individual headtorches on the players added depth and movement to the performance as well as being practical. The first in a series of underground installations with the orchestra.
