David Appleyard

My practice is rooted in making unexpected connections between people, places, objects, histories and ideas. Through research, observation, conversation and associative thinking, I develop work that invites audiences to reconsider the relationships between the everyday, the overlooked and the extraordinary. Curiosity is the driving force behind my practice. Working across public and studio contexts, my projects often begin with a fragment—an object, story, encounter or place—from which new meanings emerge.

Research is not confined to archives or libraries. It often begins there but develops through movement, observation, conversation and sustained curiosity. Over the past twenty years I have developed a practice spanning public commissions, heritage projects and studio-based work.

Accessibility is important to me. I want my work to work for anyone. I aim to offer an accessible point of entry while rewarding curiosity with further layers of meaning. Where humour appears, it is rarely an end in itself. Instead, it acts as an invitation, drawing people towards ideas that may become melancholy, uncanny or profound.

Conversation is an important part of my practice. I develop ideas by testing emerging connections with other people, exploring whether they resonate beyond my own experience. When they do, the work moves beyond personal observation and becomes a shared means of communication.
