Daniel Chek-Shu Housley

I work across portraiture, documentary and fashion, often moving between candid observation and more carefully constructed images. I am interested in the ways people perform, protect and express their identities, and in the quieter moments where those identities become more vulnerable or uncertain.

A lot of my work centres on queer experience, family, cultural heritage and place. I am drawn to people and communities that are often flattened into one story, and I try to make photographs that feel close, specific and emotionally honest rather than overly explanatory.

My British and Hong Kong Chinese background also shapes how I think about home, belonging and cultural memory. These ideas often appear through portraits, family photographs, drag, nightlife and work made between the UK and Hong Kong.

Although my practice spans documentary and fashion, I see both as ways of thinking about identity and self-presentation. One allows more space for observation, while the other gives me room to construct an image more deliberately. I am interested in the tension between those two approaches, and in how a photograph can feel both real and performed at the same time.
