Nick Grellier

Stroud
Born Toronto 1966. BA Fine Art Chelsea College of Art 1988 / MA Fine Art UWE Bristol 2020. Working across drawing, text, assemblage, animation and video performance.

My practice is rooted in drawing and language, extending across sculpture, textile, performance, and collaboration. I work with everyday domestic materials, discarded papers and rubbish found in public spaces and use collecting and repetition as methods. Through time-based processes, a pared-back visual language, and deadpan text, my work examines power within social and political hierarchies, counterbalanced by human tenderness. I explore the meanings embedded in objects and overheard conversations, seeking to communicate power and empathy with economy and with “obvs most importantly: humor!”

In recent years I have collaborated with artist Emily Lucas, (both laughing) Collaborative, researching the function of drawing as an autobiographical act with exhibitions and site specific installations, and with artist filmmaker Anna Cady making experimental multi-projection installations. I produce Pecha Kucha Nights Stroud at Stroud Valleys Artspace.
