Susan Banks

Louth
I studied painting at Croydon and completed my M.Phil thesis, The Relationships Between Female Subjectivities And Contemporary Painting By Women in Hull in 2000. Still painting & critically engaged.

Statement update May 2024

My practice-based research is stimulated by curiosity about ancient painting since encounters in Italy, Crete and mainland Greece, My work references female characters, mortal, immortal, heroic, tragic and weird, which occur in Greek mythology.

While fragments of ancient painting are rare, it is supposed that images from lost paintings occur in ancient ceramics so all sources are mined for possible motifs to pilfer and abstract from.

There is pleasure in pattern and playful references; some of the process is Intentionally rough because it is in a painting about paintings that have decayed.
